Barbadian middle-distance standout Ashlyn Simmons, is taking the next step in her promising athletics career after signing with Alabama State University’s Track & Field and Cross Country programme in the United States.
The opportunity follows an outstanding final year at the junior level for Simmons, who has continued to establish herself as one of Barbados’ leading young middle-distance athletes.
Simmons enjoyed a memorable 2026 CARIFTA Games in Grenada, capturing two gold medals for Barbados. She secured the island’s first gold of the Games with victory in the Under-20 Girls’ 1500 metres, clocking a personal best of 4:36.94. She followed that performance with another commanding victory in the Under-20 Girls’ 800 metres, crossing the line in 2:09.07 ahead of fellow Barbadian Danya Skeete.
Her CARIFTA success added to an impressive school season. Representing The Alexandra School, Simmons broke the BSSAC Under-20 Girls’ 1500m record with 4:40.66 before going on to lower the BSSAC 800m record to 2:08.57.
Simmons’ CARIFTA journey has also included success in previous years. In 2023, she captured gold in the Under-17 Girls’ 1500m and silver in the 800m, while her performances earned her recognition from the Barbados Olympic Association, including its 2023 People’s Choice Award and a Junior Female Athlete Recognition Award.
Now, at 18, Simmons will carry that experience into the collegiate ranks with Alabama State, where she will have the opportunity to continue developing academically and athletically while competing in the United States.
