Luke McIntyre Shines for Barbados in Athletics and Triathlon

Luke McIntyre Continues to Shine for Barbados

At just 17 years old, Luke McIntyre is quickly establishing himself as one of Barbados’ exciting young multi-sport athletes, producing impressive performances in both athletics and triathlon during an outstanding 2026 season.

McIntyre’s latest achievement came at the 2026 Americas Triathlon Junior Cup in Lima, Peru, where he captured gold in the Junior Men’s race with a winning time of 58 minutes, 26 seconds.

Competing over a sprint-distance course featuring a 750-metre swim, 18.7-kilometre bike ride and five-kilometre run, McIntyre was among the leaders from the start. He shared the fastest swim split of the competition at 10:54 before completing the cycling leg in 31:40.

It was on the run, however, that the young Barbadian made his decisive move. McIntyre produced the fastest 5km run of the race, clocking an impressive 14:27, to pull away from the field and secure victory by 14 seconds.

From CARIFTA Champion to International Triathlon Success

The victory adds another major achievement to what has already been a memorable year for Luke McIntyre and Barbados.

In April, representing Barbados at the 2026 CARIFTA Games in Grenada, McIntyre delivered a commanding performance to win gold in the Under-20 Boys’ 5,000 metres. He crossed the line in 15:42.51, more than 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

That triumph represented significant progress from his bronze medal performance in the same event at the 2025 CARIFTA Games.

McIntyre also successfully defended his BSSAC 5,000m title for Harrison College earlier in the season and earned a bronze medal in the Elite Men’s race at the World Triathlon Development Regional Cup in Bridgetown in February.

A Young Athlete on the Rise

McIntyre’s performances have also earned recognition beyond Barbados. He was selected as one of just six young male athletes from across the Americas to participate in the Team Americas Training Camp in South America.

The programme brought emerging athletes together for high-level training and international competition as part of a development pathway towards the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.

His performances across two demanding sporting disciplines are an encouraging sign for the future. Whether competing on the track or transitioning between swimming, cycling and running, McIntyre continues to demonstrate the discipline, endurance and determination required to compete at an international level.

The National Sports Council congratulates Luke McIntyre on his continued success and proudly celebrates another young Barbadian athlete making his mark on the regional and international stage.

Congratulations, Luke! 🇧🇧
