Barbados' Baby Gems Shine Bright!

The 21st Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Championships wrapped up last week with a buzz of excitement and competitive spirit. Hosted at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium, the event brought together the region’s brightest young netball talent – among them was the Barbados’ Under-16 Netball Team. Affectionately known as the ‘Baby Gems,’ they stole the spotlight with their fierce determination and ultimately secured a proud second-place finish.
The Baby Gems started the tournament on a high, storming past Antigua with a commanding 46–7 victory. They kept that momentum going with back-to-back wins over Dominica (41–16), St. Lucia (33–21), and Grenada (30–24). Their only loss came at the hands of a strong Trinidad and Tobago team, with a final score of 22–39. Despite that lone stumble, the Gems played with heart and hustle, proving themselves a force to be reckoned with throughout the tournament.
The team also saw individual talent shine bright when Keanna Harte impressed with her remarkable shooting accuracy; while Deeya Forde-Haynes, Chelsea Best, Tyesha Trotman, and Tyra Griffith were recognized for their consistent, standout performances on the court. The Baby Gems not only racked up goals, but racked up awards; winning Best Uniform, Most Disciplined Team, Best Spirited Team, Best Goal Average and Best Defending Team.
Their performance at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium speaks volumes about the talent and potential bubbling within Barbados’ youth netball program. With more competitions on the horizon, the Baby Gems are already looking ahead, determined to keep growing and glowing in the world of netball.
